Josephine Caroline Lang (1815-1880), German composer, singer, pianist and teacher, was an extremely gifted woman with a rich familial inheritance in music and theater. This thesis expresses Josephine's life in a social-cultural context that includes the consideration of (1) woman's role in nineteenth-century society; (2) the artistic and intellectual elite of Munich, Tubingen and those of world renown with whom Lang associated; (3) the milieu in which she lived, moved, created and performed. Lang's music was published when she was still a teenager and Felix Mendelssohn was so impressed by her creative talent that he gave her free composition lessons when she was sixteen years old. Mendelssohn promoted her music, was moved by her personality and extolled her innate musical gifts. Her music was critiqued and reviewed in the important music journals of her day. Lang was primarily a Lieder composer who chose her poetry to match her emotional-psychic state of the moment. Her songs document her life and in this thesis are associated to her biographical data. The 153 Lieder analyzed here help to define her Classic-Romantic style of emotionally rich music in coherent form. The appendixes of this thesis provide an alphabetical index to Lang's songs and their library or publisher source, an alphabetical index to her piano works and a discography. Both the biography itself and the musical analysis section of the dissertation allow one to perceive the chronological sequence of the music. Together they document the lived experience of an outstanding nineteenth-century woman and fill a gap in the available literature on the history of women composers.Subjects--Topical Terms:
