In this study, the author explored the differences between the demographics of the communities where school systems did or did not use corporal punishment. The communities in which the school systems were located were evaluated on per capita income, educational per capita expense, teen birth rates, drop-out rates, suspension rates, expulsion rates, juvenile arrests, ratio of Black to White residents, and percentage of persons below the poverty level. The second part of the study involved a survey of the system superintendent's opinions of the influence of various community groups on the decision to use or not use corporal punishment in the schools and on the efficacy of seven types of punishments. The study revealed that the drop-out rate, the expulsion rate, and the juvenile arrest rate were statistically significant variables between the communities that did or did not use corporal punishment. In the second part of the study, the survey revealed seven out of eighteen variables that showed statistically significant differences in relation to the opinions of the superintendents of the systems that did or did not use corporal punishment.
