The following thesis explores the securitization of Austria's prison population in the context of securitization and societal/identity security while combining it with critical race theories to comprehend and analyze why and how Austria has come to have such a disproportionately high percentage of minorities in prison. Due to the fact that the following study focuses, amongst other things, on inmates with a non-Austrian citizenship, it is highly relevant in an international context. Furthermore, the following thesis will also focus on how far Muslims, which are the largest religious minority in Austria, are overrepresented in Austrian prisons by collecting data through interviewing the current Muslim prison Chaplain of the penal institutions in Vienna (and Korneuburg) who is also the Head of the Islamic Prison Chaplain in Austria. Moreover, this thesis will also examine to what extent private companies such as G4S, European Homecare and Ors GmbH (Arbogast 2016, 39) are profiting from detention and imprisonment- especially when it comes to the detention of asylum seekers, while also highlighting in how far racism and capitalism are intertwined into this global phenomenon.The data collected may be extremely useful for both civil society and the academic community when debating a topic that has been a matter of concern for politicians, policy makers, researchers and the general public for many years. Although ambitious in nature, the goal of this thesis is to shine light on a previously disregarded issue, in which almost no studies have been carried out, especially when it comes to Muslims in Austria's prisons.
