The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between adolescent substance use (alcohol, marijuana, prescription drugs use, and polysubstance use) and risky sexual behaviors (unprotected sex, substance use before sex, and sex with multiple partners). Archival data was collected from the Minnesota Student Survey (MSS) utilizing 36,471 (18,394 males, 18077 females) 11th grade students between the ages of 15-20 years old, that attended high schools in Minnesota. Multiple Chi-Squares and a Logistic Regression were conducted to analyze the data. The findings indicated that students that use substances engage in more risky sexual behaviors. There were minimal differences between substance use and gender. A higher rate of girls used alcohol and prescription drugs, while boys used more marijuana and engaged in more risky sexual behaviors. In conclusion, boys and girls are using substances and engaging in risky sexual behaviors at similar rates. The results underlie the importance of addressing substance use and sexual risks in early adolescents with both genders. Future research is needed to continue to gain insight into the relationship between the two variables.
