Technology is in the midst of a growing evolution within the educational setting. Because of this, technology as well as technological advances are impacting the ways students learn. In order to meet these demands, teachers may be increasing the use of social media educational applications to aid students. As technology rapidly expands, a school district's existing social media usage policy may be absent or ambiguous. Teachers may be left to decide what they consider ethical use of social media technologies available for educational purposes. The absence or ambiguity of a social media policy could be met with unintended ramifications for teachers and the school district. Consequences can be serious, including suspension or termination of employment. Possible legal complications could also come from improper use of social media applications in the educational setting. The insight gained from this qualitative study could be impactful. To understand the ethical perspective of teachers regarding the use of educational social media applications, group interviews were conducted. Teachers were chosen based on their knowledge of social media applications and on their social media use. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and coded. The researcher then determined the themes from participant responses. Themes include ethical perceptions, social media concerns, existing school district policy, and formation of school policy. Recommendations upon conclusion of the research included an examination of existing school district policy. If such policy is non-existent, it is of utmost importance to establish said policy to protect teachers, students, and the school district. Furthermore, this examination may lead to an actionable plan to reduce or possibly eliminate any further misuse of social media, both personally as well as professionally.
