Despite the increased of use of online pornography in recent years, much is unknown regarding the effects of consumption on users. Particularly, it is unknown if using online pornography creates a significant difference in the perception of responsibility in cases of sexual assault. The present study attempted to determine if online pornography use was associated with statistically significant differences in the responses of individuals when evaluating level of blame with female victims in hypothetical rape scenarios. Previous research indicated pornography to have both positive and negative effects in interpersonal relationships, especially with romantic or intimate partners. Prior literature also demonstrated a cultural tendency in the United States to blame victims out of belief in a just world. The primary researcher for this study created a two-part survey to examine the possibility of online pornography use contributing to blaming female victims of rape. This survey collected demographic data and asked participants to respond to hypothetical rape scenarios. 161 individuals responded to the survey, and 128 valid responses were used in the final analysis. Analysis of the data were run using an independent samples t-test to determine if there was significant difference in the mean responses of the two groups (online pornography users and individuals who do not use online pornography). Contrary to the primary researcher's expectations, there were no significant differences in the responses of individuals who use online pornography and individuals who do not. Further analysis between genders, types of pornography theme viewed, and amount of time viewing pornography were conducted with oneway ANOVA and independent samples T-Test analysis. A statistically significant difference was found between male identifying and female identifying individuals regarding intimate partner rape and spousal rape. Findings, limitations, multicultural factors, and suggestions for future research are also discussed.
