Institutions, both formal and informal, play a vital role in economic development. In Chapter 1, I analyzing how land tenure security affects allocative efficiency of land and labor. Leveraging a land tenure reform in China starting in the late 1990s, I find that secure property rights led to 1) more land rental participants and a higher share of rented farmland and 2) a reallocation of rural labor towards the non-farm sector. I further estimate a discrete choice model. It shows that secure property rights led to landlord-tenant matches that were less driven by relationship and location. In Chapter 2, I investigate how competition among corrupted officials facilitates citizens getting public services. We show the importance of market structure in determining a corruption equilibrium in the context of highway merchandise transportation in West Africa, where checkpoint officials frequently stop truck drivers requesting for petty bribes. We estimate a difference-in-differences model to show that road construction on one corridor increased both bribes and enforced delays on the other corridor that was unaffected by the construction. This work demonstrates spillover effects of the road construction as officials who were not targeted by a local intervention would have higher bargaining power over drivers. In Chapter 3, I study how cooperative structure affects a firm's risk-taking and performance. I document significant differences in subprime lending between banks and credit unions prior to and during the Great Recession. Our empirical models control for important differences between credit unions and banks including firm characteristics, borrower characteristics and state-level economic conditions. We argue that the remaining difference captures effects of credit unions' cooperative structure which induces them to internalize the utility of their customer-owners. Our findings explain why credit unions often appear more risk averse relative to commercial banks, which has important implications for researchers, policymakers, and regulators.
