This qualitative study was designed to examine the financial literacy acquisition strategies employed by 12 successful small business owners. Because the literature strongly correlates financial literacy with enhanced business success, this study was guided by a single research question: What strategies do small business owners in the United States use to acquire financial literacy? The transtheoretical model theory (TTM) and its five stages of change (SOC) were used as the theoretical framework for this study because acquiring a new skill involves a behavioral change. A semi-structured instrument comprised of 18 interview questions was developed and used for data collection. The resulting data were analyzed using NVivo 12 to identify themes and word frequencies and to formulate word clouds for commonalities in participant responses. The findings revealed seven distinct themes, (a) building relationships through conferences and other contacts; (b) educating yourself: taking classes, listening to others, and reading books; (c) using accountability tools; (d) asking questions; (e) conducting research and planning; (f) developing and using external sources (e.g., creating a team, working with bookkeepers, bankers, and so forth); and (g) understanding what you know and do not know early on in the process, representing the various ways that the small business owners in this study used to acquire financial literacy. Overall, respondents indicated the most important concept in acquiring financial literacy was understanding what they, themselves, know and what they did not know. The data show that the level of financial literacy was a function of the individual's perceived financial literacy needs and personal abilities. The results from this study indicate the need for a follow-on longitudinal study to examine how the use of increased financial literacy influences business success outcomes, perhaps utilizing a mixed-methods or quantitative approach.
