The rapid rise of the Spanish speaking population in the United States has created an increase in demand for Spanish speaking mental health providers and services (Verdinelli & Biever, 2009). With this demand comes the complexities of translation across languages. The Spanish language is not easily translated into English just as English is not easily translated into Spanish, resulting in loss of meaning in the process (Van, Deeg, Abma, & Jonsson, 2010). A construct in one language does not always mean the same in another language (Van, Deeg, Abma, & Jonsson, 2010). Therefore, my research questions for this study were: What are the experiences of bilingual counseling trainees providing strengths-based therapy in Spanish? How has their bilingual training experiences impacted their skills in providing therapy in Spanish? The purposive sample consisted of seven Latinas who provided therapy for Spanish speakers. The qualitative methodology of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was adopted as the research design for this study. IPA was used to describe the experiences of bilingual therapists-in-training who provide strengths-based therapy and who are also in the PSSSP (psychological services for Spanish speaking populations) program at Our Lady of the Lake University, which is the pioneer bilingual training certificate site in the U.S. This study solely focused on the descriptive experience from the perspective of the participants. Data analysis included transcriptions, coding, identifying, and interpreting common themes of their experiences. Specifically, in this study I have explored PSSSP members' experiences with intention to advocate for further bilingual training across mental health education when understanding further the experiences of individual's training in one program.
