College admissions is a daunting and intimidating experience for many high school seniors. This study investigated the experiences of high-achieving, gifted students specifically as they experienced the college application and decision-making process in their senior year of high school. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that this special population of students considered when deciding where to apply to college. A phenomenological approach was chosen to present their lived experiences. One-on-one, in-person interviews were conducted with 10 high-achieving, gifted students who were enrolled in public high schools. The transcription data were manually categorized and coded. This study found that students considered the process stressful but relied on various resources to provide them support, including parents, research, and their own self-motivation. Most of the students in the study considered selective colleges and selectivity was a major factor in their college application decisions. Academic program fit was also a major consideration as most of the students had settled on a major, a possible career path, as well as determination to attend graduate school. Keywords: gifted, college, college application, admissions, higher education, phenomenology.
