Since the inception of gifted identification, marginalized youth are underrepresented as gifted. Gifted identification evolved from a singular concept of intelligence to considering a multiple-model approach of intelligence. The role of parents in the gifted identification process varies with parent nomination, often being the last used pathway for gifted identification. Parents of marginalized youth are less likely to know and to use this pathway for gifted consideration, which poses these questions about parent perceptions of gifted traits that are important to them as well as parent involvement and understanding of the gifted identification process. Using a convergent one-phase design, I collected qualitative and quantitative data from parents and teachers of third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students using an online survey. This mixed methods approach included document analysis of internal and external documents related to gifted identification. Results showed constructs for task commitment, creativity, and above average ability were equally important. Perceptions of their involvement varied with parents having limited involvement and parent nomination being the least used pathway due to foreseen and unforeseen circumstances.
