The prediction of effective psychotherapy is one of the most researched topics in the field. Two major predictors of successful psychotherapy outcomes are the therapeutic alliance and therapist empathy. Alliance and empathy are generally considered two distinct and separate variables, but few studies examine their relationship to therapy outcomes when considered together. Alliance and empathy are also moderately correlated, indicating shared variance that needs to be accounted for when predicting clinical outcomes. The purpose of the current study was to use meta-analysis to examine the partial correlation coefficients between therapist empathy and therapeutic outcome (accounting for alliance) and alliance and outcome (accounting for empathy) to estimate their relative association with successful therapy outcomes. Data was collected from previous therapeutic alliance, empathy, and psychotherapy outcome studies (k = 10). All partial correlations were standardized and analyzed using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis Program. Results indicated that both therapeutic alliance (r = .14) and therapist empathy (r = .12) were unique predictors of psychotherapy outcomes even in the presence of one another. Moderators such as time of measure administration for both variables, client characteristics, study characteristics were not significant. More comprehensive research is needed to continue to explore how alliance and empathy work together in predicting psychotherapy outcomes.
