The mesophotic zone of the Flower Garden Banks, located in the Northwestern Gulf of Mexico, has been the subject of intense research during the last two decades as technology supporting deep water research has advanced, as well as the need for understanding in this 'middle light' region. This represents a descriptive study of the mesophotic zone of two coral reef banks, West Bank, which is a part of the marine sanctuary, and McGrail Bank. Surveys were conducted using remotely operating vessels (ROVs) equipped with video archiving instrumentation. ROV footage taken by NOAA in 2003, 2010, and 2013 was used to describe and compare fish assemblages at the West Bank and McGrail Bank by taking counts and identifying fish within video transects. Six videos from West Bank collected during 2003-2010, six videos from McGrail Bank during 2003 , and three videos from McGrail Bank collected in 2013 were examined for fish density and identification, associated depths and bottom habitat types/dominant sessile organisms. Examination of film footage indicated hard bottom or structure habitat attracted a more diverse and abundant assemblage of fish species compared to soft bottom habitat. Regions of high relief and hard bottom attracted larger schools of fish, whereas soft bottom habitats, which were more common below 76 m, attracted individual fish not seen on structured habitat. Taxonomically, the most dominant group of fish at both banks were from Family Serranidae, which was comprised of zooplanktivorous and piscivorous species. Overall the species richness or abundance between West and McGrail Bank fish community indices were similar, althoughvariety of habitats differened at the different depth groups. Therefore McGrail Bank should be considered for inclusion to the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary since it provides similar habitat and supports similar assemblages of fishes within the mesophotic zone. The majority of surveyed habitat types in 2013 were hard bottom and high relief, which was shown to attract more fishes overall. Both banks showed a variety of habitat types, leading to mixed overall results of dominance and diversity.
