The purpose of this research was to analyze how the culture within the energy industry impacts critical infrastructure security. The need for adequate security within critical infrastructure and specifically the energy industry is a constant issue. The industry faces a significant threat within the cyber domain. That threat comes from many attack vectors and can be deterred by having the proper focus towards security. Within the research different aspects of the energy industry and its culture will be examined. This research answered three questions broken down by their originating impact. The first question began by addressing cyber awareness and its need to ensure security the impact culture has on awareness was addressed. The second question then examined Open Source Intelligence, how it is treated within the industry and how it can be used against the industry was examined. Finally, the third question focused on, the use of legacy and newer intelligent systems was examined to showcase the compromise of security the created by keeping the systems in use.By examining these different aspects, the intent is to emphasize ways the security of the critical infrastructure is impacted. Through the emphasis it is possible to see the security of the systems and assets within the industry are compromised through simple methods. The emphasis comes down to the culture and the unique environment the energy industry operates leading to a lack of awareness towards the cyber threat and its effects. By overcoming this lack of awareness, it could be possible to shift the industry towards a stronger security posture and improve its ability to adapt, respond, and overcome cyber-attacks and threats.
