The Old Testament records the story of God advancing His sovereign plan for the redemption and preservation of His people. Throughout the Old Testament, God works in and through human choices. The book of Esther is part of this overarching story and yet, God's name is never mentioned. Instead, six main characters - Vashti, Xerxes, Mordecai, Esther, Zeresh, and Haman - use what agency and influence they have for or against God's people. When viewed through the intertextual lens of other Old Testament Scriptures - where God's sovereign deliverance through human choice is vividly seen - the book of Esther can offer this same perspective. God sovereignly works for the redemption and preservation of his people through the choices of people.
