In the Letters to Timothy and Titus (LTT), Paul provides one of the richest NT repositories of teaching on the natural family, as well as extensive discussion of the spiritual family to which Christians belong-the church. Paul's teaching on the natural family in the LTT is explored and summarized in significant detail, drawing upon advances in Roman family studies and early Christian family studies. Following this analysis, Paul's understanding of the spiritual family in the letters is investigated, engaging his use of metaphorical kinship language as a lens. Subsequently, the interactions in the LTT between the natural family and the spiritual family are highlighted in order to better understand how Paul conceived of the relationship between the two. It is argued that in the LTT, Paul provides a vision of the natural family as a legitimate, necessary, and ordered institution which exists in functional cooperation with God's spiritual family, the church. Paul's guidance related to the natural family in the LTT, marked by language related to reputation, is understood not to be a matter of accommodation to the prevailing culture, but a way to extend his gospel ministry by means of his congregations living in accordance with the family ethics they proclaim.
