This dissertation seeks to clarify the meaning of the impartation of the Holy Spirit in John 20:22, a much-debated verse regarding which scholars have proffered a confusingly diverse and contradictory array of competing interpretations. The interpretive difficulty is exacerbated not only by the need to demonstrate how this text relates to other passages about the Spirit in John's Gospel but also by the necessity of determining how it relates to other prominent Johannine motifs. Two of the more important related themes consist of the glorification of Jesus and eternal life. The goal of this work is to explain the best interpretation of this event in 20:22, especially in terms of its implications for a proper understanding of the progression of redemptive history. The first chapter largely consists of a summary and evaluation of various proposals from previous scholarship. This survey elucidates some of the problems related to the interpretation of this crux interpretum, highlighting specific issues in need of more satisfactory resolution. The second chapter clarifies the meaning and timing of the glorification of Jesus, which the evangelist regards as the precondition for the impartation of the Spirit (cf. 7:39). It argues that this prerequisite consists of cross-resurrection-ascension and that the culmination of this process arrives on Resurrection Day. The third chapter then clarifies the crucial question of how the believer's present participation in eternal life relates to 20:22. It demonstrates that this conceptualization of an "already-not yet" participation in eternal life constitutes a significant modification of the consistently futuristic view of this motif in Second Temple Judaism. It further argues that the impartation of the Spirit marks the moment at which believers became participants in eternal life as a present reality. The next two chapters conduct an exegetical analysis of every passage in John that mentions the Holy Spirit, including 20:19-23. The goal is to clarify 20:22 within the overall framework of Johannine pneumatology. The final chapter summarizes the findings and articulates the implications of the proposed interpretation of 20:22 as the impartation of the life-giving work of the Spirit under the New Covenant.
