Paul frequently uses the building/temple image in Ephesians. Although his explicit reference occurs only in Ephesians 2:20-22, he has this image in the background when he employs the concept of wealth and various architectural language (e.g., Eph 2:14, 3:16-18, and 4:7-16). In addition, he uses expressions that are conceptually linked to the temple (e.g., "access to God" in Eph 2:18; 3:12; "sacrifice" in Eph 1:4, 7; 2:13; 5:2).Despite its frequent references and importance for Paul's argument in Ephesians, few scholars and commentators have paid careful attention to Paul's use of the image, except making exegetical comments on Paul's usage in Ephesians 2:20-22. Moreover, no one has made any serious attempt to examine the rhetorical impact this image would have had on members of Paul's audience who were deeply influenced by the cultus of Artemis and never saw the temple in Jerusalem. This study, therefore, seeks to fill this gap by exploring how and why Paul uses the building/temple image the way he does in Ephesians and how his audience would have understood his imagery. This study does not seek to determine the origin of Paul's temple concept or dispute its meaning. It is beyond any doubt that Paul's concept is deeply rooted in the OT and Jewish understanding of the temple as the dwelling place of God. The purpose of this study is to explore Paul's contextualization of his temple theology to fit the sensibilities of his primarily Gentile audience living in, or near Ephesus, in the shadow of the temple of Artemis and to inquire how those whose lives and thoughts were intimately intertwined with the temple of Artemis would have understood Paul's building/temple expressions. To achieve this goal, this study first examines the socio-religious milieu of Ephesus and western Asia Minor with special attention given to the temple of Artemis and her cultus (chapter two). It then investigates comprehensively both explicit and implicit references to the building/temple image in light of their socio-religious and literary context (chapters three and four). It then focuses on Paul's references to sacrifice and priesthood that are conceptually linked to the temple (chapter five). In conclusion (chapter 6), this study contends that Paul intentionally contextualized the building/temple image in Ephesians to appeal to his audience's understanding and expectations of temple. By doing so, he challenged the power of Artemis and the influence of her temple, demonstrated Christ's authority, and instilled a sense of identity and unity among the believers in Ephesus (and the surrounding region) pulled by the undertow of the temple of Artemis.
