Thesis (Ph.D.)--Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2019.
This dissertation examines the theme of witness in the book of Revelation in light of Old Testament allusions and parallels to the Johannine literature. By examining all nineteen occurrences of the witness terms, this dissertation argues that the theme of witness is centered on divine testimony, which is the revelation of God as the testimony borne by Jesus.Chapter one establishes the need for this study, states the thesis, offers a history of research, and explains the methodology as well as the limitations and the plan of study. Chapters two to five provide the exegetical study of the passages that contribute to the theme of witness. Chapter two examines the witness terms in the prologue and epilogue (Rev 1:1-3 and 22:6-21) and reveals the importance and the function of the theme of witness for the entire book. Chapter three examines the phrase [special characters omitted] in the rest of the book (Rev 1:9, 12:17, 19:10, and 20:4). Chapter four examines the description of Jesus as [special characters omitted] (Rev 1:5 and 3:14) and the ambiguous and often neglected term [special characters omitted] in the phrase "tent of testimony" (Rev 15:5). Chapter five examines the texts where the emphasis is on the human dimension of testimony, namely, Revelation 11:1-13, 12:11, 2:13 and 17:6. The clues from these texts suggest that the content of their testimony is the testimony borne by Jesus. Chapter six concludes the dissertation by summarizing the results and by offering a theological synthesis of the theme of witness. While previous studies have examined smaller parts related to the theme of witness, or have focused exclusively on the human dimension, the contribution this dissertation makes is to show that evidence exists to prove the God-centeredness of the theme of witness in Revelation. The last book of the canon presents the revelation God entrusted to Jesus as a divine testimony that Jesus himself has borne, both through the content of the book of Revelation and through his earthly ministry. Being a witness as a follower of Christ, therefore, refers to holding onto and passing on faithfully the revelation of God as the testimony borne by Jesus.
