Chapter 1 lays out the thesis of the dissertation by giving a brief introduction to each of the subsequent chapters. It is claimed that the primary goal of New Testament Textual Criticism (NTTC) should remain the search for the original text. Failure to do so will undermine biblical authority for faith and practice.Chapter 2 focuses on the traditional goals and methods of NTTC. Major works of leading text-critics, past and present, are examined with regards to their understanding of the primary goal of the discipline. It is argued that even though text-critics across the spectrum have differed on methodology, most have remained unanimous regarding the importance of seeking the original text of the NT.Chapter 3 examines the text-critical view of Bart D. Ehrman, the first proponent of the new trend in NTTC. Although Ehrman has written many works geared towards the lay audience, his Orthodox Corruption of Scripture is a major scholarly work that has challenged the primary goal of NTTC.Chapter 4 focuses on the methodology of David C. Parker. His Living Text of the Gospels has also undermined the traditional goal of NTTC, albeit from the basis of the Gospels only.Chapter 5 is a survey of a major proponent and popularizer of the new movement, Eldon J. Epp. Unlike the previous two proponents, Epp's view has to be gleaned from his many articles on the subject.Chapter 6 examines the change in J. Keith Elliott's position regarding the original text. Compared to the previous three, Elliott's writings are more declaratory than descriptive.Chapter 7 discusses the Coherence-Based Genealogical Method as the most recent development in the new movement in NTTC. Although it is touted as a great improvement over previous methodologies of establishing the text, its proposal of the "initial text" (Ausgangstext) undermines the goal of the original text.Chapter 8 gives the final analysis and critique of the new movement in NTTC. It evaluates the four major premises that are common among each of the proponents. It also includes a section regarding the relationship of NTTC and Inerrancy. Contrary to the proponents' easy dismissal of inerrancy, it is argued that the doctrine of inerrancy is rooted in inspiration and not in text-critical conclusions.Chapter 9 concludes the study with an appeal to retain the primary goal of NTTC of establishing the original text of the NT.
