The third century B.C. development of fallen angels and a prince of demons point to the fact that these concepts had to at least be in seed in the Old Testament from which post-exilic Jews could draw. While the New Testament established these teachings as part of Christian doctrine, though not in the exact from found in the Jewish apocrypha, later Jews and pagans pushed back on these teachings to which the Church Fathers had to respond. The Fathers, under the guide of the Book of Revelation, found a fascinating prefigurement to Satan in the Old Testament sea serpents, who, when one considers the mythology surrounding them, provide Old testament figures who are in some form opposed to God, but nevertheless unsuccessful. Moreover, their presence in the Old Testament does not present a challenge to God's omnipotence and Jewish monotheism. This is important since one of the main criticisms presented against the Christian Satan is that he is too strong an opponent placed against God, as seen in Celsus' criticism.
