Current research in spiritual formation has neglected the topic of suffering. This study shows through an exegetical study of First Peter that suffering is integral to holistic spiritual formation. In fact, First Peter suggests that suffering is necessary for spiritual formation to occur. Furthermore, there is a communal aspect to suffering that has been neglected in the past. First Peter suggests that there is a special "κοινωνiα" that occurs only through suffering. Finally, First Peter suggests that if suffering is not embraced and responded to in the correct way the person will fall under the final judgment. Modeled on the life of Christ, suffering for Peter is not a road some may have to walk. It is the only road to salvation.
