This dissertation documents the state of six phonetic measures across five sociolinguistic variables in Standard Mandarin and Nanjing Dialect Chinese-the phoneme /pʰ/, the syllable rhyme /aen/, the syllable onset /n/, and the vowels /y/ and /iɛ/. These variables are shown to differ between the dialects despite a historical trend for Nanjing Dialect to structurally converge with Mandarin, or in other words to undergo "Mandarinization." This difference crucially allows for continued Mandarinization both within and beyond the context of the experiment. Within the context of the experiment, a shadowing paradigm is used to test an assumption of Change- by-Accommodation Theory, namely that interpersonal accommodation during interaction in one dialect leads in a mechanical and hierarchical fashion to the adoption of features into another dialect. By having 30 participants shadow a hyper-Mandarinized model talker producing two of the variables listed above, this experiment elicits spontaneous phonetic accommodation on two phonetic measures during interaction in Mandarin, and on one other measure during a Nanjing Dialect post-test. The theory's assumed hierarchical pattern of accommodation and convergence are only in evidence given one of several possible interpretations of the data. Outside the context of this experiment, rather than being a straightforward mechanical progression from interpersonal accommodation to dialectal convergence, participation in Mandarinization in the real world is shown to be sensitive to a number of psychosocial variables, including aspects of language dominance such as relative frequency of use and self-reported proficiency, implicit biases towards the dialects as measured by an implicit associations test, and strength of accommodative behavior during the shadowing block of the experiment. This dissertation's implications extend beyond the scope of Change-by-Accommodation Theory to methodological considerations in research on phonetic convergence, and to suggest, in line with other prior research, that the actuation and diffusion of contact-induced dialect change-and sound change more generally-are gradual processes that take place within the individual and in accordance with their individual qualities.
