The purpose of this study is to provide an anti-colonialist and socially just analysis of Asian men and masculinities as applied to the domain of career development. To date, Asian men are often examined within a White societal framework and are largely absent from scientific inquiries on issues of men and masculinities and career development. Chapter 1 provides a literature review of Asian men and masculinities that juxtaposes an exploration of indigenous Asian masculinities to the influence of White colonialist masculinities and Orientalism on the scientific understanding of Asian men in their everyday experience. Chapter 1 concludes with recommendations for future research on Asian men and masculinities, and encourages an inquiry into Asian men's experience in traditionally masculine spaces to better address the dilemmas between authentic Asian and colonialist White masculinities. Chapter 2 presents an original study where nine Asian men of East Asian descent participated in a 60-minute semi-structured interview to explore the intersectional influence of White and Asian masculine norms on their experiences and persistence in a law enforcement career. Data were analyzed through a modified version of Consensual Qualitative Research, and four domains emerged: (1) contemplating law enforcement as a career path, (2) developing a culturally-informed professional identity, (3) navigating systemic and interpersonal challenges, and (4) leading through social justice and indigenous masculinities. Chapter 2 concludes with a discussion on implications and recommendations for future research and best practice in counseling psychology.
