This research examined the relationship between attachment style, two major life transitions (newlywed and emptynest) and marital adjustment, across a twelve year period. This study used both cross-sectional and longitudinal data to address the main hypotheses. Data were drawn from the archives of a twelve year longitudinal study of men and women facing normative life transitions (Lowenthal, Thurner, Chiriboga and Associates, 1975). The study sampled 77 men and women at baseline 4, 8 and 12 years post baseline and post life transition, on a variety of marital adjustment measures. A model of adult attachment yielding four attachment styles (secure, 44%; preoccupied, 23%; fearful, 9%; dismissing, 23%) was used to examine attachment style. Data analyses revealed that men and women with secure attachment styles had fewer number of marriages, higher levels of marital satisfaction and less marital strain. Among those with insecure attachment styles, dismissive adults had more positive and negative marital events and concerns. Newlywed adults reported more positive life events and emptynest adults reported less preoccupation with negative life events. Insecure emptynest adults had less preoccupation with negative life events, newlyweds with secure attachment style had less strain and more positive life events, and emptynest adults with secure attachment styles experienced more personal contact with their spouse.
