Educational programs directed toward fostering environmental literacy have been established in several developing nations in response to deteriorating global environmental conditions. Included within these programs are residential camping experiences which allow children several days of continuous exposure to the natural environment and nature education. Although many of these organized camping programs have existed for more than a decade, empirical research on them has been sparse. The existing literature has been limited to providing descriptions of program goals and objectives, participation rates, and implementation strategies. It was the purpose of this study to investigate in depth, the nature of such programs taking place in India. As the inquiry proceeded, it became evident that organized camping was rapidly becoming a widespread and well-recognized phenomenon in India. However, a clear sense of association, cooperation, and commonality of values between organizations offering these experiences seemed to be lacking. In addition, organized camping was not considered a profession: no recognized organizational structure existed, no standards of quality for the experience were established, no professional education was available, and no financial remuneration was provided for many of those conducting the experiences. After discussing these matters with respondents, the respondents themselves indicated that professionalization of the organized camping movement in India was necessary. Methodology. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews of 12 individuals directly involved with provision of organized camping experiences. This purposive sample was created using the criterion-based sampling strategies of network and reputational case selection and maximum variation sampling. Triangulation was performed through multiple interviews of the same respondent, participation in a group discussion on organized camping, and use of literature and other secondary data sources. The methods of unitization and categorization and constant comparison were used to process the data. Results. The final product of this research is a model towards professionalization of organized camping in India. It is grounded in the data collected from respondents, and represents their constructions of solutions to perceived problems. The categories addressed by this model are: programming and curriculum, involving school personnel and parents, participants, camp staff, remuneration, funding, facilities, networking, accountability, and establishment of an advisory board to facilitate the professionalization process. Conclusion. The model developed through researching the phenomenon of nature camping provides a description of existing conditions and perceived needs for establishment of professionalization. Implementation of strategies and suggestions contained within the components of the model and the summary of recommendations may provide the impetus needed to initiate the process of professionalization.Subjects--Topical Terms:
