Affluent youth are an underserved population in terms of mental health support, and the increase in depression and anxiety rates in affluent adolescents over the past 20 years is alarming. This project proposes a therapeutic approach incorporating cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness practices, and existential theory to lessen stress and increase wellbeing in affluent adolescents. Cognitive behavioral therapy is an efficient, empirically supported way to help adolescents gain tangible skills to address maladaptive thought patterns and make meaningful behavioral changes. The incorporation of mindfulness practice contributes elements of practical and easily implemented stress-reducing techniques that are very important for often overscheduled and highly anxious affluent youth. Existential theory supports adolescent youth in exploring their authentic self and their personal life meaning. The 8-week group therapy approach uses positive peer relationships to increase participants' self-acceptance and strengthen peer connectedness.
