Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dentoskeletal effects of the Carriere Motion Appliance (CMA) and complete orthodontic treatment in growing Class II patients.Materials and Methods: A retrospective, non-therapeutic, observational study was conducted. Lateral cephalograms were collected for 30 patients treated with a Carriere Motion Appliance at three time points: T1 (pretreatment), T2 (after removal of CMA), and T3 (posttreatment). The control group consisted of 30 untreated Class II subjects analyzed at T1 and T3. Lateral cephalograms were digitally traced and analyzed using 14 skeletal and 7 dental measurements. Independent-sample Student t-tests and Mann-Whitney U-tests were used to determine the changes between the CMA group and the control group. Repeated measures ANOVA tests and Friedman tests were used to compare the timepoints of the CMA group. Results: Mean Class II correction via the CMA was 6.8 months, and mean overall treatment time was 20.7 months. Maxillary growth was restricted with use of the CMA relative to the control group according to Co-A. Minimal mandibular growth occurred while using the CMA. With the appliance, the Wits appraisal improved by 1.8 mm, the occlusal plane in relation to Frankfort horizontal increased by 2.7°, and the mandibular plane angle increased by 0.9°. Overjet, overbite, and molar relationship all improved significantly, while proclination of the mandibular incisors increased by 7.7°.Conclusions: A Class II malocclusion can be corrected in 7 months time while utilizing the CMA. Most changes were dentoalveolar in nature with some skeletal changes occurring in the maxillary sagittal plane and in the vertical skeletal dimension.
