An unknown percentage of state college students never use the resources and services provided to them by the academic library, despite research suggesting that doing so would be beneficial to students' academic achievement and advancement. The purpose of this mixed methods sequential explanatory study was to identify motivating factors that influence use of the academic library by college students enrolled in associate degree programs at a mid-sized state college in Florida. The researcher obtained quantitative data from a survey of 253 currently enrolled AA/AS students and then followed up with five purposefully selected interview participants who represented a variety of library usage types to explore the results in more depth with qualitative data analysis. The conceptual core of this study investigated the motivational factors that influence student use of the academic library using Keller's (2010) ARCS model of motivational design concepts: attention, relevance, confidence, satisfaction, and environment. The quantitative results of the study indicated significant positive linear relationships between library use and the satisfaction and environment variables. Conclusions from the qualitative data analysis showed that participants were influenced by all study variables. This study aligned with Keller's (2010) observations on the influence on motivation and behavior of the ARCS model concepts, including environmental influences. The results and findings of this study have significant implications regarding practice and policy in the academic library setting. This study emphasized the need for more research on factors influencing student motivation and behaviors related to academic library use.
