Choosing a foreign language teacher is one of the questions that High school students face during their academic life. High school administrators need to while scheduling foreign language faculty, examining the differences among native and non-native speaking teachers of foreign languages. The purpose of this quantitative study was to analyze students' perceptions of teachers' capabilities with teaching the Spanish language and how these perceptions may be influenced by their teachers' primary language (native vs. non-native). The participants were Spanish language students from a high school in a school district of Illinois, ages ranging from 13 to 19 years old. In this study, a validated questionnaire was administered to answer the following research questions: How do students' perceptions of the capabilities and credibility of their teachers differ for native Spanish-speaking teachers versus non-native Spanish-speaking teachers? And how do students' commitment to continuing their foreign language studies change based on students' current teacher native language? A simple linear regression study was performed to provide statistical data based on students' perceptions of their Spanish teachers. Once collected the data was grouped on students' perceptions of their Spanish teachers based on their qualities as educators, and students' commitment to continue studying Spanish after high school. It was concluded that there is not a significant difference on their perception of their teachers, regardless if they are native or non-native speakers, but there is a significant difference in their commitment to continue their Spanish education after high school. Further research is needed to examined if students own language and culture affects the perceptions that they have over their teachers, and if the similarity with their teachers have a positive or negative influence on their commitment to continue their foreign language education. This results are aligned with Byrne's similarity and attraction theory, adding more information to the body of literature. This study will help School administrators to develop an educational system that promotes positive interactions between teachers and students.
