The purpose of this study was to examine the perceived value of certification among Certified Nurse Educators (CNEs). The psychometrically validated Perceived Value of Certification Tool (PVCT) was used to measure 12 intrinsic and six extrinsic indicators related to value of certification. The PVCT included eight demographic categories that were selected based on demographic information for CNEs previously collected by Ortelli (2008, Characteristics of candidates who have taken the certified nurse educator (CNE) examination: A two-year review). Of approximately 500 certified nurse educators who attended the 2013 National League for Nursing Summit, 169 completed surveys. Statistical analyses including calculations of means, Pearson correlations, and multiple regressions were used to examine relationships among variables. Findings revealed that the most highly rated intrinsic motivators for certification were enhanced feelings of personal accomplishment and personal satisfaction. The most highly rated extrinsic motivators for certification were peer recognition and increased marketability. These findings were consistent with data from prior research on the perceived value of certification among certified nurses in various specialty nursing practices.
