Despite its high cure rates, testicular cancer continues to pose a severe threat to health. To mitigate this threat, testicular self-exam (TSE) performance has been promoted through public health messaging, and often with the aid of humor. However, the effects of humor in health messaging are largely unknown, as there remains no comprehensive theory of humor effects (Greengross, 2008; Martin, 2019). Drawing insights from various disciplines, the present research aims to further understand the mechanisms through which humor facilitates or impedes (a) anxiety reduction, (b) information processing, (c) memorability, and (d) behavior change. Further, this research examines the interaction between humor and cultural effects between Eastern- and Western-culture samples. Results suggest that, in parallel to previous research (Nabi, 2016), humor may actually hinder the goals of messages promoting cancer-preventive behaviors. In fact, informational TSE messaging, compared to humorous TSE messaging, yielded greater (e.g., deeper) information processing, significantly better message recall of the steps to perform TSE (p < .05), and increased TSE performance. The intricacies of culture on humorous health messaging are discussed.
