Media plays a powerful role in the construction and maintenance of cultural ideas. In Colombia, black and indigenous women have been erased, particularly as main characters, and represented as inferior by the media often in the hands of white-mestizo elites. Even though Colombia defines itself as a mestizo and pluri-ethnic country, discrimination and racism are still complex problems in Colombia's society. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, many political and intellectual elites expressed themselves about the idea of multicultural unity in Colombia. The purpose of this research will be to explore the deep-rooted sexism and racism in Colombia and their impact on black women's representation in mass media. With a focus on the mainstream media's construction of race and gender, this research will explore three central representations and their influence in the promotion of racist and sexist ideologies. I will discuss the historical background of Afro- Colombians and their recognition as an ethnic group in 1991. Then, I will delve into three central media representations in which black women are interacting with other black or white-mestizo women. By analyzing this interaction, I want to discuss how media produces and reinforces discourses of race, class and gender in Colombia. I will analyze how those representations have changed over time and how the idea of multiculturalism has influenced audience reaction to black women's representation. Despite the inadequate representation of black women in the Colombian media, black communities remain resilient and have created organizations to denounce racist depictions of Afro-Colombians in the media.
