Many pressing issues that the United States needs to address today are closely related to racial tensions, such as the rising animosity towards non-white immigrants and citizens. While previous studies have argued that empathy may be a key ingredient in improving inter-racial relations, the fact that many Americans rarely engage in inter-group social interaction is a potential barrier for empathy-based solutions. News coverage about unjust treatment towards minorities may thus be the only channel for white Americans to connect with marginalized groups that they rarely have direct contact with. Focusing on Arab-Muslims, this project tested whether two commonly used journalistic practices (i.e., personalization, or including the voice of victims and emotionalization, or displaying emotions of victims) and individual psychological tendencies of media users (i.e., authoritarianism) evoke empathy and subsequently increase pro-social behavioral intent (i.e., empathy-altruism mechanisms). The results however did not support the proposed hypotheses about either the impact of authoritarianism or the two journalistic practices on empathy-altruism mechanisms. Nevertheless, additional analyses demonstrated that the two journalistic practices had conditional effects on the empathy-altruism mechanisms: specifically, when accompanied with personal testimonies of victims (i.e., personalization), displaying emotional states of victims in news (i.e., emotionalization) triggered the empathy-altruism mechanisms among people who held prejudice towards Arab-Muslims. The findings suggest that the two journalistic practices may mobilize pro-social behavioral intent by eliciting empathic concern from people otherwise less likely to feel empathy for Arab-Muslim victims, suggesting that news media and journalists may potentially contribute to improving inter-racial relations. Possible explanations regarding the null findings of the direct effects of the independent variables (i.e., authoritarianism, personalization, and emotionalization) are offered. Also discussed are a few directions for future studies as well as practical suggestions for journalists who wish to cover discrimination against racial minorities.
