Explicit instruction of pronunciation has not been given too much attention at within the second language classroom. This study aimed to study whether the explicit instruction of Spanish vowels improves beginner and intermediate-low Spanish learners' perception and production of these sounds, and which oriented instruction concludes in better performance. In order to carry out this study, three groups of participants were considered for each level. The first group was instructed in a perception-directed instruction, the second group was instructed in a production-directed instruction, and the third group served as a control group since they did not have any explicit teaching. The three groups completed a comprehension and production pre-test, post-test, and delayed post-test. Results showed that overall, explicit production-oriented instruction can benefit the production and the perception of these sounds. Moreover, the beginner learners level was the one who improved the most after the pedagogic intervention. In this way, the current paper suggests some pedagogical implications regarding Spanish pronunciation instruction.

La ensenanza explicita de la pronunciacion no ha recibido mucha atencion en el aprendizaje de L2. Este estudio tiene como objetivo estudiar si la instruccion explicita de las vocales del espanol mejora la percepcion y produccion de los aprendices de espanol como L2 en nivel basico y en nivel intermedio-bajo. Ademas tambien se estudia que intervencion pedagogica concluye con mejores resultados. Para poder llevar a cabo este estudio, se consideraron tres grupos para cada nivel segun el tipo de instruccion que recibieron: grupo de percepcion, grupo de produccion, y grupo control. Todos los grupos completaron una prueba anterior, posterior, y de reaccion tardia con secciones en comprension y en produccion.
