This biographical study examined C.G. Jung's life, with an emphasis on the years between ages 35 and 45. The study was undertaken in an effort to understand both how Jung responded to the difficulties that emerged at this point in his life, and also to understand how the psychological work that he did during these years shaped the remainder of his life. The research was based on biographical materials, correspondence, and personal accounts left by Jung in his lectures and written work. The analysis in this study relied on Daniel Levinson's theory of adult development. Jung's development between the ages of 35 and 45 was consistent with the pattern of adult development identified by Levinson. Jung's life during this ten-year period contained alternating structure-building phases, and more fluid transitional periods, which were each characterized by distinct developmental tasks. It was found that Jung's success at completing the developmental tasks of the novice phase, which occurs roughly between the ages of 17 and 34, enabled him to productively respond to subsequent developmental challenges in the years that followed. These novice phase tasks were: the formation of a dream; the formation of mentor-protege relationships; the formation of an occupation; and the formation of love relationships. Notwithstanding his success in responding to the developmental demands of the novice phase, Jung experienced a period of psychological crisis during his late thirties as he attempted to relinquish his dependence upon his mentor Sigmund Freud. Jung's crisis, during the phase Levinson termed "Becoming One's Own Man," arose from the conflict between his dependency on Freud and an increased need to speak with his own voice. This time of crisis and the self-analysis that it led to constituted the developmental work that was necessary for Jung to reform his youthful dream and individuate. The psychological work that Jung did between the ages of 35 and 45 was not only of enduring personal significance, it also provided the basis for much that was distinctive in his future professional work as well.
