From the Western world to developing countries, the topic and discussions of feminism and womanism continue to grow and evolve. This dissertation examines the impact and influence of the growing topics of feminism and womanism, especially among millennial Nigerian American women. This research addressed the history of feminism, feminist theories, womanist theory and discussions of feminism among the Nigerian community which served as the foundation to further understand the effects on Nigerian women, specifically the millennials living in America. This qualitative study used in-depth interviews to examine the influences of traditional Nigerian customs and patriarchal society while analyzing the impact of digital and social media as a communication vehicle. The findings indicate that despite negative gender expectations and patriarchal influences, these participants redefined the expectation of women through their personal independence, financial freedom, confidence, self-worth and success. The results also explained the importance of inclusion in the feminist movements, especially with marginalized groups, and how it can help alleviate the many challenges women face globally. The participants also indicated that the growth of feminists and social activism is due to the communities formed in the digital and social space which directly affect policy and decision making.
