Research has established that the female gender in most societies face some form of marginalisation or the other from patriarchal structures. With the emergence of concerns about the state of the environment and the role of humankind in its despoliation, gender scholars have extended the effects of patriarchy to the environment. With the Ecofeminist theory, scholars have established a link between the marginalisation of the female gender and the degradation of the environment. The objective of this research was thus to investigate, using Ecofeminism, the assertion that there are similarities in the ways the female gender and the environment are subjugated. This was based on the premise that patriarchy subjugate both the female gender and the environment. The research methodology was sociological. It afforded the analyses of cultural practices which exemplified the female and environmental marginalisation in the investigation of two early Nigerian novels by male authors: Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart (1958) and Elechi Amadi's The Concubine (1966).Some of the findings of the study were that female characters in the selected texts were depicted has meek and receptive to societal dictates as there were specific roles assigned to them which confined them to less prominent positions in the societies. The environment was functionalised and deemed as useful or useless depending on the fulfillment of the roles of providing and nurturing. There was the feminisation of the environment and the animalisation of female characters which foreground their objectification. These this female characters are depicted as closer to the environment through their biological acts of mothering, naturally accepted without questioning. The study concluded that patriarchal practices had a great influence in the ways female characters were depicted and how the environment was utilised towards female degradation. The significance of this research is that the clamour for the social, cultural, and economic emancipation of the African woman holds significant implications for the ways the African environment is re-established.
