Arapaho UMC is a diverse congregation consisting of individuals from a wide variety of faith backgrounds and biblical knowledge. The project proposes to use visual arts as a medium to enhance theological instruction. The author proposes that presenting theologically inspired works of art can form the basis for a shared conversation about theology. The goal is to find a common way of uniting people from diverse traditions who may be oriented more towards verbal or written theological expression. The works of art presented in the project are designed to investigate the impact visual arts have on spiritual practices. Does the presentation of visual art inform the congregants of Christian practices or spiritual development? Do works of art produce a spiritual experience that transcends intellectual or aesthetic appreciation? Can non-representational art convey spiritual truths without literal illustration of biblical narratives?To explore these questions, a series of abstract paintings based on the fourteen Stations of the Cross will be displayed at Arapaho UMC. Representing the Stations series is ideal as the passion of Christ is common to all Christian traditions. Artwork will be shown in two phases. In phase one, artwork and research information on the stations will be presented to a pilot group in a small group setting to research participants' initial response. Information will include a background of the stations and its use in different theological traditions. This data will be used to form a handout which will accompany artworks during the final showing. In the second phase, the final show will be held at Arapaho UMC in an auditorium space (Fellowship Hall). A questionnaire will be distributed to gather demographic data on the participant's background and reactions. This investigative questionnaire is aimed at measuring qualitative reactions including attitude and responsiveness to each work of art. The analysis of data will gauge the positive and negative responses to determine the effectiveness of visual imagery in communicating Christian spirituality. The questionnaire will also provide space for congregants' personal comments or critiques. The research driven findings of this study will help local churches consider the use of visual arts to enhance educational ministry.
