Artist Hans Richter (1888-1976), celebrated for his early films and role as Dada historian, sustained a life-long investigation of dualities. His theoretical framework centered around diametrical concepts: chaos and order, form and anti-form, art and anti-art. Richter immigrated to the United States in 1941 and maintained distinct but overlapping practices as painter and filmmaker. This study redresses the tendency to treat geographic and media-based divides as additional dualities within Richter's practice. As artist and historian, Richter constantly revisited the theories that he developed in the early 1920s. Examining the 1941 through 1976 trajectory of his work, this thesis argues that by 1960 Richter had reached a state in which he collaged rather than archived his past theories and imagery. The artist's sustained engagement with his earliest theories of form and duration, and reengagement with issues of intermediality, allows for a more nuanced understanding of his later works and communities as well as his earliest paintings and films.
