This study examined the existential experience of sons and daughters who provided end-of-life (EOL) care to their parents. The qualitative research method was transcendental phenomenology. Published literature revealed limited caregiver research from an existential perspective and no studies that strictly sampled filial caregivers. There are no routine programs that prepare informal caregivers to support a dying relative. Prior research demonstrated that detailed information could create preparedness and confidence among caregivers of EOL patients. The majority of informal caregivers' concerns involved psychological issues. European studies stressed the usefulness of an existential framework for understanding and improving caregiver psychological interventions. This study used purposeful sampling and recruited 10 study participants from a target population in the United States. The sample consisted of intergenerational caregivers; these adult children had spouses, children, jobs, and separate residences. The study used in-depth interviews to probe the EOL caregiving experience. The research question was, what is the existential experience of adult-child caregivers at parent's end-of-life? Data analysis followed the modified Van Kaam method outlined by Moustakas and included epoche, phenomenological reduction, imaginative variation, and synthesis. The findings indicated that adult children faced many decisions and unknowns. Many said they were unprepared for the loss of their parents. Qualities of informal filial care included transitions and changes, availability, and knowledge. The participants stated that their parents had unique needs and concerns, that they learned as they went, and that their parents were at the center of their world in the family right then. The presentation of results focused on the invariant constituent parts of participant experiences and the qualities of the filial care phenomenon as it appeared to this group of caregivers.
