In 2019, there were an estimated 268,600 new cases of breast cancer along with an estimated 41,760 deaths, however 89.9% of patients survive 5 years or more after being diagnosed with breast cancer (SEER, 2019). Nutritionally important side effects of breast cancer treatment include: loss of appetite, sore mouth or throat, dry mouth, dental and gum problems, changes in taste or smell, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, fatigue, and depression (American Cancer Society, 2019). Nutrition education may be important in survivorship because, breast cancer survivors face adverse effects to cancer treatment that may increase their risk for other chronic diseases (Rock, et al. 2012). Few studies have examined the effectiveness of the survivorship programs or the perceptions of the programs among survivors. This research surveyed women participating in a survivorship program at a hospital in the southwest. Analysis included evaluating the attitudes related to the nutrition education given to menopausal and post-menopausal women who have been treated for breast cancer in a Hispanic community. Results showed about 48% percent of participants received nutrition education in the breast cancer survivorship program. The overall results of this study found that those who received nutrition education found it easy to understand and used the information. The study also found a relationship between how well participants felt the nutrition education met their needs and the overall satisfaction with the nutrition education. The findings from this study can inform future research on nutrition education effectiveness and satisfaction in breast cancer survivorship programs.
