The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to examine if and to what extent a correlation exists between total emotional intelligence and the four subscales of emotional intelligence: perception of emotion, managing own emotions, managing others' emotions, and utilization of emotion and winning percentage in high school boys' varsity basketball coaches in the United States. Two research questions guided this study: (1) what is the correlation between emotional intelligence and winning percentage? And (2) what are the correlations between the individual subscales of emotional intelligence: perception of emotion, managing own emotions, managing others' emotions, or utilization of emotions and winning percentage? The theoretical foundation for this study was based on an individual's traits. A total of 87 head boys' varsity basketball coaches completed the demographic questionnaire, the Assessing Emotions Scale, and had a verifiable winning percentage. Winning percentage was calculated from publicly available resources. The researcher found a significant positive correlation between total emotional intelligence and winning percentage (rp = .39, p < .001), perception of emotions and winning percentage (rp = .41, p < .001), managing own emotions and winning percentage (rp = .26, p = .015), and utilization of emotions and winning percentage (rp = .21, p = .046). While the findings revealed a significant correlation between the study's variables, further research is required to determine if the findings are generalizable to other sports, other competitive athletic levels, and female and multi-gender athletic teams.
