Women have long been taught that certain types of leisure are inappropriate or even dangerous for their participation because of their sex/gender identity. Despite efforts toward equality (e.g., Title IX), and the relaxing of gendered expectations in society, social rules of gender still play a prominent role in creating barriers to participation in sports and physical activities for many women. Because of the myriad potential benefits sport(s) and physical activity may provide to women, it's important that women are not only tolerated or allowed to participate, but are empowered to do so. While research that seeks to understand how women experience sport(s) and physical activity and how they successfully negotiate constraints to their participation exists, such work has been limited in scope. Further, in the process of identifying and confirming that differences do exist between men's and women's leisure participation and experience, scholars have not attended to examining leisure's role in the construction of these social categories as markers of difference. The purpose of this study had two specific aims: (1) to explore leisure experiences and the ways in which they reinforce and/or challenge culturally normed ideologies of gendered expression, and (2) to challenge leisure scholars to further utilize the methodology collective memory work to shift their thinking "away from the margins" to the center of society; and antagonize what it means, in terms of power, to be a man, white, heterosexual, cis-gender, and able-bodied. The resulting themes from the study can be envisioned as an ecological model of interaction, though each system is a simultaneous and mutually intertwined process. These concentric circles of influence can be seen as an interplay taking place in front of a backdrop of historical cultural context. The conceptual but overlapping themes derived include: (1) Leisure and Cultural Influence: Hegemonic Masculinity and Female Passivity, (2) Leisure and Institutional/Structural Influence: Structuring Gender, and (3) Leisure and Intra/Interpersonal Interaction: An Arena for Self-surveillance and Gender Performance.
