Misalignment in transactional communication has the ability to influence the relationship between athletes and coaches, and reduce opportunities athletes to reach their peak performance level. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the perception of GZSAs on how the communication techniques used by the head coach influences their motivation to perform. A descriptive qualitative case study design was considered appropriate to describe the influence of coach communication through the perception of Generation Z student-athletes in the southeast Region of the United States. To gain in-depth understanding on how transactional communication from a coach influences Generation Z student-athletes, face-to-face, semi-structures interviews, observations, and document review was conducted. Findings from this study reveal that (a) communication tactics and verbiage should remain consistent, (b) unintended messages received by GZSAs may cause tension amongst team members, (c) GZSAs need to feel that their coach has confidence in them and their abilities, (d) non-verbal cues may include positive incentives that encourage GZSAs, (e) positive coach-athlete relationships allow for transactional communication to be transpired in a more positive manner, (f) standards and expectations for transactional communication should be made clear and precise, (g) a lack of communication, or messages that seem unclear, may cause emotional stress for GZSAs, (h) a sense of confusion is developed if changes in the schedule is not communicated quickly and effectively, and (i) anxiety is developed when communication is misconstrued through technology. Findings from this study may benefit current college coaches by helping them better understand how communication with Generation Z student-athletes influence their motivation to perform.
