The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how freshman student-athletes described their lived experiences in high school with verbally aggressive coaches and how it influenced their intrinsic, extrinsic, and amotivation for sport participation in a Midwest university. This descriptive study was guided by three research questions: How do freshman student-athletes interpret their intrinsic motivation for playing sports after an experience with a verbally aggressive coach in a Midwest university? How do freshman student-athletes interpret their extrinsic motivation for playing sports after an experience with a verbally aggressive coach in a Midwest university? How do freshman student-athletes interpret their potential for amotivation for playing sports after an experience with a verbally aggressive coach in a Midwest university? Deci and Ryan's self-determination theory served as this study's theoretical foundation. Purposive and snowball sampling were used to recruit 11 respondents (7 males and 4 females) that met the study's criteria and had phenomenon experience. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, semi-structured in-depth interviews, a research journal, and member checking. Data analysis included Groenewald's modified Hycner method of phenomenological data analysis. The nine prevalent themes that emerged included: self-confidence and self-efficacy, passion and love, teammates and family, proving coach wrong, college career, pleasing the coach, lessons learned based on experience, low self-esteem, and lost purpose. The results of this study may further the awareness of coaches' verbal aggression for coaches and administrators. Keywords: Coach verbal aggression, motivation, self-determination, and athlete.
