The goal of this qualitative, descriptive single case study was to gain an understanding of school coaches' abilities to teach life skills to their athletes, and to gain information to create a coach education program on how to teach life skills to athletes. Previous research (Camire, Trudel, & Forneris, 2009; Gould & Carson, 2008; Holt et al., 2008; Jones & Lavallee, 2009a) indicated sport participation may aid the development of life skills in youth athletes when specifically targeted within the sport program. The study sample included junior high and high school coaches, with at least one year of coaching experience, who were employed by a small, private school in western Ohio. Five coaches shared their understanding of life skills, their ability to teach life skills, the life skills they felt their athletes needed, and their personal coaching philosophies. The study resulted in five overarching themes: coaching philosophy; understanding life skills; intentionality of life skills developed; strategies to help athletes develop life skills; and issues with transferability of life skills. The results also showed most participants lacking in three areas: personal coaching philosophies that would implicitly enable positive youth development in daily practice; life skills training or specific coach training in relation to life skills; and how to incorporate life skills teaching into coaching programs. Future coach education programs may benefit by teaching coaches how to develop personal coaching philosophies, to improve their understanding of life skills teaching, and to incorporate life skills teaching into daily practices.
