There is no distinct blueprint on how to become a successful student athlete but that does not mean that exceptional student athletes do not share common characteristics amongst each other. In this study, the researcher aimed to determine what some of these characteristics might be and what role they play in facilitating their performance. To do this, the Hexaco-60 designed by Ashton and Lee (2004) was used to measure specific personality factors and traits. Maintaining high levels of androgen's such as testosterone contributes to human athletic performance. 2D:4D ratios and handgrip strength tests are two protocols that indirectly measure androgen exposure prenatally and in adulthood respectively. Participants involved in this study were 61 student athletes from the Track Field and Water Ski teams at The University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM). Bi variate ordinal correlations between the Hexaco and athletes ranking indicated that the more successful athletes appeared more open to experience but less agreeable. Athletes who scored higher on the hand-grip strength test showed lower levels of emotionality. Based on the findings from this study, further research could potentially lend useful information towards the field of sports psychology.
