The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how leaders' emotional intelligence, as defined by self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management emotional intelligences, impact the employee's performance in university settings located in the Southeast and Southwest regions. It was not known how employees described the impact of their leaders' emotional intelligence, as defined by self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management emotional intelligences, on the employee's performance. The theoretical foundation included the works from Daniel Goleman. Goleman examined the emotional intelligence of leaders, how leaders get results, what makes a great leader, and Emotional Intelligence and how it mattered more than IQ (intelligence quotient). The four research questions that guided this study of how employees, from a southeast and southwest university setting, describe the impact of their leaders' emotional intelligence were: "How do employees describe the impact of leader (1. self-awareness, 2. self-management, 3. social awareness, 4. relationship management) on their performance?" The sample group consisted of six hundred participants which a total of 37 participated. The data sources included an online assessment and phone interviews. The themes that developed provided additional insight concluding the more effective leaders, which were those in which the employees' expressed exhibited a strong work ethic, caring, collaborative, and open honest communication, demonstrate evidence of a higher level of emotional intelligence, which allows a more positive impact on the employees' performance, thus leading to maximum work outcomes.
