High-speed connectivity plays a role in the rate of adoption of emerging technologies and unrivaled connectivity between people and technology. The increased speed and ubiquitous connectivity have allowed emerging technologies to flourish in homes and businesses and has facilitated the wide-scale acceptance of telecommuting and Internet of Things (IoT) devices in U.S. households. Both telecommuting and IoT increase the risks to organizations if employees are unaware of the risks. This study investigated the capabilities of an adapted unified information security compliance model (UMISPC) in explaining the intentions of telecommuters to secure home office IoT devices. The adapted UMISPC model contained role values, fear, habit, response efficacy, perceived threat, and social influence as the independent variables that influenced telecommuter intentions. Collaboration with five information security experts led to the development of the home office IoT scenario using the statistics that 81% of hacking-related breaches in 2017 were because of stolen or easily guessable passwords such as from default configurations. The 146 participants sampled in this study were older than the age of 20 years old, permanent employees at U.S.-based organizations with more than 500 employees, and performed a portion of their employment at a home office. The adapted model explained 54.9% of the variance in the behavioral intentions of telecommuters. Confirmation of only two of the hypotheses indicated that only role values and social influence showed a statistically significant influence on the intention of telecommuters to secure home office IoT devices. Security practitioners can use the results of this study to tailor awareness and training programs to leverage the findings from this study to educate and influence telecommuter cyber defensive behaviors.
